The "AWD" in the personalized license plate refers to the car -- a Subaru Legacy Outback AWD (All Wheel Drive). The "4" means "for" or "in favor of." And the "MAO" refers to Chairman Mao, the founder and leader of Communist China. Yes, there are Maoists in Berkeley. A surprisingly large number of them -- most of whom drive big capitalist cars like this one.
[Update: A reader contacted me claiming that he knows the owner of this car, and says that the owner's initials are "M.A.O." Thus, the license plate has nothing to do with Chairman Mao. However, in order to verify his claim, I asked this emailer to confirm specific details about this car that the owner would know; he was unable to provide the correct details, and instead said that the car's owner would contact me directly with the info. So far, I have not had any contact from the owner. Until I get some kind of confirmation about this claim, I will treat it as dubious, especially since other statements from this emailer (such as that "AWD" might also stand for someone's initials) detract from his credibility.]
